The British government seems very complex to Americans, and though the monarch doesn’t vote on political issues, they do have the right to appoint a prime minister. With the death of Queen Elizabeth II and her upcoming funeral, people are curious about who actually pays for it.
Similar to America, Great Britain gets money from taxpayers, so funeral costs are “covered by the state,” according to the New York Times. The Treasury of Great Britain gives payments to the royal family to be used to fund payroll and royal duties, and for reference, Princess Diana’s funeral would cost around $11 million when adjusted for inflation in 2022.
Queen Elizabeth II's funeral is a very lengthy affair, and some events include transporting her coffin from Balmoral Castle to Buckingham Palace, Westminster Hall, Westminster Abbey, and then to the Royal Vault at Windsor Castle. The queen was known to be conscious of finances, however, and we will likely never know the exact cost of her funeral.
